what moves Brandon Opalka
A longtime fixture of Miami’s art scene, and a welcome presence in Colorado the last few years, Brandon Opalka and I teamed up on Room 220, a gallery space we curated and hosted shows in over 2024 in Denver’s old Evans School. Brandon’s playlist and interview answers exhibit the same kinetic energy his artwork conveys. Click here to see his available work and stroll down to read what makes him move.

MK: What are you working on presently?
BO: I’m working on a body of work titled “the jukebox in the hooker’s light house".”
It’s based on a fictional story where the elements are all metaphors that can be interpreted uniquely.
MK: What was the last album you listened to start to finish?
BO: GNX by Kendrick Lamar.
MK: What’s the vibe for summer 2025? What song will you be playing on repeat?
BO: Luther by Kendrick Lamar. It’s a love ballad about imagining a better future for one’s beloved. And also the transformative power of love inspired by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn.
MK: What’s your hype song?
BO: “Passing me by” by the Pharcyde has been my hype song since 1992 when it came out. I always found the video visually inspiring. And it always takes me back to a more innocent time.
