WAYS TO LEAVE(save) EARTH

Neü Folk Gallery presents its newest exhibition “Ways to Leave(Save) Earth,” guest curated by Dani/elle Cunningham. The exhibition is free & open to the public beginning with an opening reception in Room 220 of the Evans School on Saturday, May 11 from 5-8 pm. The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 4 pm and by appointment through June 8.

Born from the curator’s simultaneous fear of and fascination with the current trend of celebrity billionaires attempting space travel, this exhibition highlights seven artists who explore imagination as a tool of resistance against and in critique of an unsatisfactory reality. Using sculpture, painting, collage, and interactive installation, the artists question resource funneling toward exploring, exploiting, and potentially migrating to outer space at a time of globally felt social problems on Earth. Although the exhibition touches on bleak subjects including the divide between who is and is not allowed access to space, the artists also offer viewers hope through creativity and expressions of diverse lived experiences. Together, they refute fatalism, fostering collective resilience and situating our human existence beyond Earth and into the greater context of the universe.

Exhibition features Julio Alejandro, Yazmin Atmore, Laura Beacom, Max Kauffman, Christine Nguyen, Hannah Ronan-Daniell, and Stuart Sachs.
